The month of March is associated with many events and holidays: St. Patrick’s Day, Daylight Savings, March Madness, the first day of Spring, the approaching of Easter. Notably among these significant events, March is also Women’s History Month. Despite being important, this aspect of the month can often go unnoticed. This March, Bishop Feehan has taken many steps towards ensuring that their students are well informed about not only the existence of Women’s History Month, but also about the many women who we celebrate and honor during it.
In the mornings over morning announcements, Feehan’s Female empowerment club, the PowHER Club, reads biographies of significant women throughout history. To make the biographies even more engaging, the club arranges the biographies into a game of trivia, where the first student to correctly guess the woman’s name wins. These games of trivia include descriptions of women from various backgrounds with various accomplishments; examples include Malala, famous female athletes, and even the founder of the Sisters of Mercy, Catherine McAuley.
In addition to the trivia, students and faculty members are welcomed by the PowHER Club and Feehan’s Multicultural Association to stop by Mr. Grant’s office and take a Women’s History Month ribbon to wear, in order to show support and allyship. The ribbons are the official colors of Women’s History Month: Purple, green, gold, and white. Purple symbolizes justice and gender equality, green symbolizes hope and growth, gold symbolizes light, and white symbolizes purity and freedom.
Biographies of historical women can also be found around the school, in populated places such as the library. Female authors are displayed on the bookshelves, to facilitate finding books to read that are written by women.
These supportive actions that Feehan has taken to promote Women’s History Month have been well received by many members of Feehan’s student body, including many female students themselves. Regarding the ribbons, senior student Gabby Roy says: “I’m really happy to see that members of the Feehan community have been wearing these ribbons. Seeing my friends and teachers wear them makes me feel both supported and capable – I think it’s a very important gesture.”

Feehan’s dedication to promoting Women’s History Month has helped to raise awareness about a largely significant movement and relevant issue that deserves attention, advocacy, and allyship.
