‘Senioritis’ : a term used to describe ‘a supposed affliction of students in their final year of high school or college, characterized by a decline in motivation or performance. These symptoms include losing interest in studies, feeling burnt out, and a feeling of irritability. While this might seem like a silly term to use, it unveils a serious problem in society among adolescents, who are feeling the pressure of applying to colleges and universities. With that in mind, the question to be asked is, what are some ways to avoid or prevent senioritis?
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), 84% of 12th grade students in America are not receiving a sufficient amount of sleep to function for an entire day of school. Now, how do we change this? Time management can be extremely difficult to manage, but with the lack of sleep students are getting, it makes it almost impossible to keep up with daily activities. Not only this, many students must worry about life after high school, whether that be college, trade school, or working.
To combat the pressing issue of senioritis, here’s some things students should do to prevent a full slip away:
- Incentives: For every good grade, reward yourself with something that makes you feel good (ex: treats, clothes, etc)
- Time management: Don’t procrastinate! As soon as you get home, set out a time for homework and studying and don’t slack off.
- Extracurricular activities: Find a passion, hobby, or project that interests you and can keep you motivated until graduation.
While not everyone suffers from this growing issue, these solutions can truly change the average unmotivated senior’s life around for the better.
