Massachusetts is on its way to implementing a state-wide ban on cell phones, and Bishop Feehan has taken it upon themselves to embrace this policy with open arms. Their new law is ‘Phones away, all day’, meaning from the homeroom bell to the 2:20 p.m. bell, phones should be nowhere in sight.
Bishop Feehan’s newly instated cell phone policy has brought forth a variety of opinions among the students and faculty on campus. While some students believe that the complete non-usage of cell phones during the school day is beneficial to the student body, others, seemingly, are the opposite.
Mrs. Smith, the Vice Principal of Student Life, approached the controversial situation with a new perspective.
“My goal is for the students to connect and talk with each other,” She explains. “I’ve noticed how people stay off of their iPads at lunch, and how they want to talk to each other.” Mrs. Smith has seen an immense shift in connectivity between students at Feehan, and she hopes to keep that sense of friendship between students alive and thriving.
While the freshmen have never been without this rule, the seniors have been having trouble adjusting to this new rule. Avery Powers ‘26 explained how she was overall frustrated with the ‘Phones Away Policy’. “I hate the strictness of this policy, and how I can’t even check the time without the fear of getting my phone taken.”
January Hadden ‘29 and Maria Vilecco ‘29 both have different opinions. They both believe that “It’s not as bad as I thought it would be.” They agreed that they feel like it is easier to talk to their friends, and it eliminates the distraction of social media in class.
While this policy has its drawbacks and its benefits, it will help determine school life in the long run for Bishop Feehan High School, paving the way for the future generations of students and faculty.
