On April 7th, Heritage Week begins here at Feehan. Heritage Week is a celebration of the different cultures of both our students and faculty members. The week was officially established in February 2024. This year the Feehan Multicultural Association organized and headed the events that happen throughout the week.
The main events started on Monday with a TAG day and door decorating. This TAG day consisted of students wearing either colors that represent their ethnicity or nationality, or wear traditional clothing from their respective cultures. For door decorations, different teachers represented countries by decorating the outside of their classroom doors with a nation’s colors/flag.
On Tuesday, there was a Rock Talk centered around different cultures that are found among students around Feehan. The speakers for the Rock Talk were Liza Trinidad ‘25, Ritika Roy ‘25, Neve Constantine ‘26, Cristian Gomes ‘27, Medea (JJ) Bercachi ‘27, and Alex Ombati ‘28. During the Rock Talk, the speakers described different traditions and cultural norms for their respective countries/ethnicities.
On Wednesday, there was a pop-up for the Feehan Multicultural Association where Mr. Grant provided attendees with donuts! The next day was the staple of Heritage Week, the Potluck. Hosted in the Rock Gymnasium, different parents from different cultures provided food for the potluck. Some different cuisines include Jamaican, Filipino, Lebanese, and Haitian. Personally, the jerk chicken that Mr. Grant brought in was definitely my favorite. The potluck lasted all D period on that Thursday and a large number of students and administrators attended.
Finishing out the week, the winner of the door decoration contest was announced. Throughout this week, there were also things like prayers in different languages in the mornings, lunch games, and a scavenger hunt. After Heritage Week ended, during the Spring Rally, students and administration members held a procession with flags representing different countries.
To learn more about Heritage Week and its impact on the student body and administration, I decided to interview Mr. Grant and Wesley Jones, the senior president of the Feehan Multicultural Association. Mr. Grant described the impact of Heritage Week as “adding another layer of community to Feehan,” Mr. Grant also noticed that many students were excited to be a part of this new tradition here at Feehan.
A challenge that Mr. Grant and Wes had in organizing Heritage Week from last year was trying to be creative throughout all of the activities this week. However new ideas were added for this year’s week. Last year’s response to Heritage Week was extremely positive and had a lot of support from the administration and student body.
